City of Burien holding Rain Garden Workshop this Saturday, June 17

Duwamish Infrastructure Restoration Training – aka DIRT Corps – is building ten residential rain gardens in partnership with the City of Burien Government, and will be holding a Workshop on June 17.

Participants will “learn and do” as they plant the first three rain gardens with Duwamish Infrastructure Restoration Training – DIRT Corps, the Community Partnership Environmental Training Program, who is contracted for the project. Workshop instruction will be available in both English and Spanish and no experience is necessary

Workshop starting location: 11935 8th Ave SW in Burien

Schedule:

  • 9:00 – 9:15 am. Welcome and Introductions – Mary Eidmann, City of Burien and Cari Simson, DIRTCorps
  • 9:15 – 9:30 am. Site Analysis: Determining rain garden size based on rainfall, roof size, and gutter placement – Jaén Gomez, DIRTCorps
  • 9:30 – 9:45 am. Rain Garden Plant Selection – Roseann Barnhill, Aster Rosa Ecology and Design
  • 9:45 – 10:00 am. How to plant: Proper planting technique, plant intro and demo with words of wisdom from the crew – DIRT Crew
  • 10:00 – 11:00 am. Plant and Mulch – Everyone
  • 11:00 – 11:15 am. Travel to next Rain Garden planting at 11238 14th Ave S in Burien – Everyone
  • 11:15 am – 12:00 pm. Plant and Mulch – Everyone
  • 12:00 pm – 1:15 pm. Travel to next Rain Garden planting at 1021 SW 150th St in Burien – Everyone
  • 12:15 pm – 12:45 pm. Plant and Mulch – Everyone
  • 12:50 pm – 1:00 pm. Closing Remarks: Wrap up, raffle prizes, and award Certificate of Training for volunteers – Mary Eidmann, City of Burien and Cari Simson, DIRTCorps

Provided:

  • Raffle drawing
  • Refreshments
  • Tools

Bring:

  • Water bottle
  • Gardening clothes

Also note on that the same day (Saturday, June 17) the Burien Wild Strawberry Festival is happening. Come see us, and if you have time, visit the festival downtown. It’s a festive day to be out!
