The ‘hometown heroes’ of the last school bond are rolling up their sleeves again – volunteer representatives from all four high school service areas in Highline met last Wednesday to continue planning for the future.
The Capital Facilities Advisory Committee (CFAC) will complete the district’s long range facilities plan and monitor progress on current bond-funded school construction. It will also study and make recommendations on school boundary revisions.
The committee is co-chaired by community members Rose Clark and Aaron Garcia. Clark is a former City of Burien council member, retired school employee and longtime community volunteer. Garcia is the White Center Promise director and serves as co-chair for YES for Highline. Both served on CFAC in 2015–2016.
“We want to look at the whole picture and get community input so families can weigh in on the options,” Clark said. “Our meetings are open to the public.”
Boundary lines must be adjusted districtwide due to the addition of two new bond-funded schools, plus classroom additions (funded by a state grant) at 13 elementary schools. New boundaries are slated to be announced by spring 2018 to give families and schools time to plan before new boundaries go into effect in the fall of 2019. The new elementary and the new middle school that voters overwhelmingly approved last November will open in the fall of 2019.

The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, September 13, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the district central office, 15675 Ambaum Blvd SW in Burien.
Forty-nine Highline residents entered their names in the lottery for open positions on CFAC. A June 7 lottery refilled nine open lottery positions. Each of the four service areas (Evergreen, Tyee, Highline and Mount Rainier) have balanced representation on the committee. There are 33 positions total, counting new and returning members.

Bond Oversight Committee Holds First Meeting
Highline Public Schools activated a second committee who will meet monthly to oversee spending on the current school bond approved November 2017. The Capital Projects Oversight Committee has eight members. They met for the first time on June 14. Four members represent the Capital Facilities Advisory Committee (CFAC) that planned the school bond. Four others were appointed for their experience in finance, construction and real estate. All are residents of the Highline community.
