Forty-five school superintendents from across the nation visited Highline Public Schools last Monday (Oct. 16) to observe teachers and students using digital tools and resources in and outside of the classroom.
The superintendents are members of the AASA Digital Consortium, sponsored by the national school superintendents association. The group visited Midway Elementary School, Chinook Middle School and Raisbeck Aviation High School. Students in the three schools hosted superintendents on tours and shared their personal experiences of learning in Highline.
At Midway and Chinook, school leaders saw students working with Chromebooks to personalize their learning, working in small groups, independently and one-on-one with teachers. During the visit at Raisbeck Aviation, the superintendents learned about how students’ experiences with aviation and aerospace partners like the Museum of Flight and Raisbeck Engineering prepare them for careers in aviation, aerospace, and other high-tech fields.
“There are a lot of innovative things that these educators at Highline Schools are doing for their students that folks across the country should come and take a look at,” said Marlon Styles, superintendent, Middletown City School District, Middletown, Ohio. “It’s definitely student-centered. It’s breathtaking to see what they’re doing for their students.”
As a member of the Digital Promise League of Innovative Schools, Highline is seen as a leader in using technology to individualize learning and extend learning opportunities for students.
“The fact that leaders would travel from across the country to see our work for themselves and learn from our students and teachers is a testament to the talent and dedication of our Highline staff,” said Highline Superintendent Susan Enfield.
