[EDITOR’S NOTE: The following is a Letter to the Editor, written by a Reader. It does not necessarily reflect the opinion of The B-Town Blog nor its staff:]
I’m writing to express my support for our Highline Educators. I know several of these people personally and many more by reputation. Teachers and other school staff have shown remarkable dedication and we owe it to them, as a community, to support their efforts for a fair and just contract.
Educators in the Highline School District have gone years without so much as a cost of living increase. The McCleary decision earmarked increased education funding for salary increases. If the Highline School District continues to deny our educators a fair increase, we’ll lose our most talented teachers to those districts that are willing to use this money as intended. In order to give our kids the best education possible, we need to be able to recruit and retain the best educators available.
I’m the parent of a bright and curious pre-schooler. I’m proud to be raising him in such a vibrant, diverse community, and watching him learn is one of the great joys of my life. I want nothing more than to see his love of learning continue in the years to come as he becomes a Highline Public Schools student.
I urge the Highline School District to please consider what this contract means not only to the hard-working educators in our community, but also to our children, who deserve the very best we can give them.
To the many educators in our community: please stay strong and know that we support you.
Thank you,
Margret Alley
