Highline Public Schools’ high schools will switch from a two-term semester schedule to a three-term trimester schedule in the fall of 2020, which means students will have five (longer) class periods a day, rather than six (shorter) periods.

The district will be holding five Community Meetings, starting on Monday, March 4.

Here’s more from the district:

The trimester schedule gives students the opportunity to take more courses and earn more credits in four years of high school. Advantages of this include:

  • Students have more opportunities to explore their interests outside of required courses in preparation for college and/or career, including the arts, career/technical education and physical education (PE).
  • Students will have more credit earning opportunities to meet the state’s new, more demanding graduation requirements.

We now have the opportunity to add new courses that give students a chance to expand their learning in an area of interest and/or to go deeper in a pathway such as STEM (science, technology, math, engineering) or the humanities (social sciences, language arts, world languages).

We want to know what courses and/or topics you would like to see added to high school course schedules. Your feedback will help us plan course offerings as well as consider future graduation requirements.

Join us for a series of community meetings across our district. Families will learn more about the trimester schedule and provide feedback on course offerings and student experiences.

All meetings will be from 6 – 7:15 p.m.
