Highline Public Schools will host the spring 2019 League of Innovative Schools meeting.
The League of Innovative Schools is a national coalition of forward-thinking school districts organized by Digital Promise, an independent, bipartisan nonprofit organization authorized by Congress to accelerate innovation in education.
The meeting will convene 250 superintendents, district leaders, corporate partners, researchers, and thought partners from across the country in Seattle. This will be the 16th convening of the League of Innovative Schools, and will feature classroom visits, collaborative problem solving, and relationship building with peers and partners.
“We are incredibly proud of the innovative work our students and teachers are doing, and we are excited to share it with our colleagues,” said Highline Superintendent Susan Enfield.
The League is comprised of 102 school districts in 33 states, representing nearly three million students. The full list of members can be found at digitalpromise.org/districts.
Meeting participants will visit four schools:
- PUGET SOUND SKILLS CENTER (PSSC)
PSSC serves high school juniors and seniors interested in specialized career and technical learning pathways. PSSC offers 18 programs, which include aerospace manufacturing, animation, fashion design and certified nursing assistant, among others. Students earn high school and college credits in a hands-on, workplace oriented environment. PSSC students graduate with certifications and job-ready skills with a jumpstart on further college and career training. PSSC is one of 20 skills centers in Washington state, offering high quality, tuition-free technical and professional training. Operated by Highline Public Schools, PSSC serves students from 22 partner high schools in Highline, Federal Way, Tukwila and Tahoma school districts. - RAISBECK AVIATION HIGH SCHOOL (RAHS)
RAHS is an innovative math- and science-focused college preparatory high school designed to serve students in grades nine through 12 who are passionate about aviation and flight, aerospace, space exploration, and related technical fields. RAHS is the only aviation-themed college preparatory school in the country to share resources with an aerospace museum. The school’s proximity to The Museum of Flight and the nearly 200 aviation-related businesses that surround Boeing Field affords students the opportunity to be inspired and informed by the region’s aerospace leaders. The school has developed a world-class career-readiness program that includes mentorships by professionals in the aviation/aerospace industries and internships in high-demand workplaces. - CHINOOK MIDDLE SCHOOL
As a 1:1 device school, Chinook has integrated technology into daily instruction with project-based learning, student portfolios and a unique library/media environment that provides students with makerspace opportunities. The school serves students in grades seven through eight. - MCMICKEN HEIGHTS ELEMENTARY
McMicken Heights offers a unique co-teaching model that benefits all students, including those who qualify for specially designed instruction. Serving students in kindergarten through grade six, McMicken Heights staff are participating in a three-year leadership cohort with Discovery Education that provides personalized learning training. The school recently celebrated growth in state assessment results due to intentional data analysis and instructional planning. - MAKER BUS
The visit to McMicken Heights will include a visit with the Highline’s Maker Bus, which provides students with opportunities to use and learn about technology–and doubles as a mobile emergency command center. It rotates to all of our schools as an innovative classroom on wheels.
