Katelyn Asare, a exemplary teacher at Puget Sound Skills Center, was recently awarded a grant from the Fund for Teachers.
The grant funds her attendance at the Positive Schools Conference in Melbourne, Australia, to learn strategies for creating a more encouraging school culture that supports equity and diversity.
Katelyn is there now, and when she returns she’ll create a workshop to be shared with her school, as well as at the district level.
“While we work hard to meet our students’ social and emotional needs as well as academic, it can be a real challenge to find resources focusing on secondary students. There are many social emotional learning program and resources focused on elementary, but few focused on secondary and even fewer that focus on diverse populations or alternative settings,” wrote Katelyn in her proposal. “The Positive Schools Conference is a rare opportunity for me to learn about how to create a positive classroom culture, as well as address students’ mental and emotional wellbeing.”
Katelyn is among the first of 494 Fund for Teachers Fellows to depart on their self-designed fellowships this summer.
