Advertiser The Tin Room Bar & Theater this week awarded its 2019 Tin Ship Scholarships to Erick Corza, a graduate of Tyee High School, as well as Cody Castaneda, a graduate of Big Picture High School.

This scholarship was started in 2016 thanks to the The Tin Room and its patrons, and is intended for graduates who want to pursue a trade school for careers in mechanics, building, machinery or craftsmanship.

“At times it feels as if the trades are dying, so our goal is to help keep them alive and allow young people to start working and supporting the community with their skills as soon as they can,” Tin Room owner Danny House said. “With your help, each year our goal is to send students who love the trades to college and help create a seamless transition for them into the work force with little to no college debt.”

  • ERICK CORZA
Erick has a passion for Auto Body Technology, and using the Tin Ship Scholarship he hopes to graduate within a few years and begin work immediately after.
  • CODY CASTANEDA
The second recipient of the 2019 Tin Ship Scholarship is Cody Castaneda, a Big Picture graduate who will use the scholarship to attend college studying Construction Technology.

“We also wish to honor the Hi-Line Tin Shop, the longest ongoing business in Burien, where for over 70 years the tin smiths used their trade to meet the needs of the local community,” House added. “Once again, thank you all for your continued support of us and these graduates, and enjoy your summer!”
