REMINDER: Help bird populations from around the world by going out in your own backyard and counting them this weekend – as well as at the Burien Birdfest this Saturday, Feb. 15, at the Dottie Harper Building from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Song bird populations around the world are on a rapid decline. The only way that scientists can figure out what is happening in different parts of the U.S.A. and the world is to get average citizens to go out and take data and sent it into scientific labs. Go out into your yard or neighborhood this weekend and be a citizen scientist. Sent your information back to The Cornell Lab of Ornithology in Ithaca, NY.
Count birds for at least 15 minutes on one or more days of the Great Backyard Bird Count – GBBC. You can count for longer than that if you wish! Count birds in as many places and on as many days as you like—one day, two days, or all four days. Submit a separate checklist for each new day, for each new location, or for the same location if you counted at a different time of day. Estimate the number of individuals of each species you saw during your count period.
Then go to Great Backyard Bird Count (http://gbbc.birdcount.org/) – and learn how to send in your information to the lab. This site has lots of great information on it.

WHEN: Saturday, Feb 15, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.
WHERE: Dottie Harper Building, SW 146th & 4th SW (next to the old library) NOTE: The building is not Handicap Accessible.
ACTIVITIES:
- Learn to identify your neighborhood birds
- Adults and children are invited
- Activities for children (both indoors and outdoors)
- Learn about the Great International Bird Count
- Presentation by Birds Unlimited from noon to 1 pm.
AGENDA:
- Dan Streiffert from the Rainer Audubon Chapter will do a a photo presentation on backyard birds and talk a bit about Audubon from 11am to noon. Dan is a well known leader in the Audubon and an excellent photographer.
- Andy Waters from our local Birds Unlimited will be speaking from noon to 1:00pm on How To Attract Birds to Your Yard and about some of their quirky and more interesting habits.
- Judy Lane, a well known artist and photographer from West Seattle will present from 1-2:30pm. Judy wrote, illustrated and published a children’s book about her dogs and a family of crows (Keiko & the Crow, AuthorHouse, 2009) in a local park. Judy will provide information on collage techniques used for the book illustrations and her mixed media artwork as well as provide some basics on bird photography.
