The Bridge School will be holding an Informational Open House this Saturday, Jan. 24, from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the school’s new location in Olde Burien at 1005 SW 152nd Street.

During the Open House, families can explore the school, meet teachers, staff and parents, ask questions and pick-up an application packet.

The open enrollment period is from January 24 – March 7, 2015.

The Bridge School is a progressive, multi-age, cooperative elementary program dedicated to fostering authentic learning through whole-child development. The program was founded in 2011 by a grassroots group of parents who sought a locally based, community-oriented school. The Bridge School now serves students age five through ten in two multi-age classrooms and offers a core academic program, a focus on social/emotional learning, regular elective courses, outdoor exploration, and an optional Friday enrichment class (open to homeschooling students).

Bridge School teachers use a variety of curriculum and approaches to support each student’s developmental stage, individual growth and intrinsic motivation to learn. Within broad themes and objectives, teachers use constructivist methods, projects and field trips to foster thoughtful problem-solving and evaluation of failure/success, while the strong teacher-student relationship supports a high level of individual attention. Additionally, the school’s small size and cooperative structure creates a strong and engaged community for families, opportunities for peer mentorship and allow the teachers to easily extend connections with local resources to support classroom learning.

Cooperative schools have a long history in the United States and are becoming increasingly popular all over the country. This model requires high parent involvement and supports a strong school to home connection. While professional teachers and staff plan and implement the curriculum, parents serve as administrative and classroom support staff. The greater Puget Sound area is home to several successful cooperative schools including University Cooperative School, Kapka Cooperative School and public cooperative schools in the Edmonds, Northshore and Marysville school districts.

In addition to core academic programs, The Bridge School offers evening and weekend workshops, lectures, and summer camps. Anyone interested in the variety of programs offered by The Bridge School is encouraged to attend the Open House to lean more. Parents and children are welcome to attend together.
