‘Be a Leader. Save a Life.’ Lifeguarding classes starts at Matt Griffin YMCA April 6

Develop leadership skills, increase life skills, learn life saving skills and develop professionalism in YMCA Lifeguarding, with classes starting April 6.

The course offers up-to-date information on how to lifeguard by anticipating and preventing problems before they occur and by taking action to help those in danger when necessary. Other information taught includes safety skills, scanning, guarding techniques, emergency systems, rescue skills, first aid, spinal injury management, legal responsibilities and pool management. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive certification in YMCA lifeguard, ASHI CPR, AED, First Aid and Emergency Oxygen.

REGISTRATION
To register for lifeguard training please register online at www.seattleymca.org (course #23284) or contact member services. Last day for registration is Monday, March 30th. Additional registration instructions and pre- assignments will follow.

JOB OPPORTUNITIES AT THE Y

PREREQUISITES:

  • Must be 16 by the end of class
  • Must be able to pass the physical competency requirements listed:
  1. Tread water for 2 minutes
  2. Swim 100 yards of front crawl
  3. Swim 50 yards of each: Front crawl with the head up, Sidestroke, Breaststroke, Breaststroke with the head up, Elementary backstroke kick with hands on the chest
  4. Perform feet first surface dive and swim underwater for 15 feet
  5. Sprint for a distance of approximately 60 feet and then perform an arm-over-arm surface dive
  6. Pick up an object (dive ring) from the bottom of the pool, tread for 1 minute (legs only), and replace object on bottom of pool.
  7. Swim remaining distance and hoist self out of water without using a ladder or other assistance
  8. Immediately begin compression on an adult manikin for1 minute or 100 compressions and follow additional instructions

CLASS SCHEDULE: Must be present for each class session in its entirety:

  • Monday, April 6: 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
  • Tuesday, April 7: 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
  • Wednesday, April 8: 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
  • Thursday, April 9: 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
  • Friday, April 10: 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

CLASS DESCRIPTION
This course is designed to provide the participants with the knowledge and skills needed to be a lifeguard and professional rescuer. Participants will be certified in CPR Pro for the Professional Rescuer, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen Administration. The course presents information on the skills and knowledge lifeguards need in pool, lake, river, surf and waterpark environments. The comprehensive course offers up-to-date information on how to lifeguard by anticipating and preventing problems before they occur and by taking action to help those in danger when necessary. The course also covers safety skills, accident prevention, scanning, guarding techniques, emergency systems, rescue skills, first aid in aquatic environments, spinal injury management, open water dangers, legal responsibilities, pool management and information on how to get a job as a lifeguard.

PRE-ASSIGNMENTS

  • Create a YMCA Account. Instructions will be provided to registrants following registration through www.seattleymca.org using the ActiveNet registration system.
  • Complete all of the Y Lifeguard eLearning lessons. An email with more information and link will be provided following skills verification.
  • Complete the ASHI eLearning lessons prior to the class. The lesson content is approximately five hours in length. An email with more information and links will be provided upon registration.

ITEMS TO BRING

  • Swimsuit
  • Towel
  • Pen
  • Snacks
  • Proof of age on April 10th
  • eLearning completion certificates for ASHI (CPR, AED, FA, O2)
  • eLearning completion certificates Y Lifeguard

Students under 18 must bring a signed minor participants permission form to class on April 6th—provided
upon registration.

TRAINING MANUALS
On the Guard: The YMCA Lifeguard Manual, 5th Edition will be checked out to participants. If you would like a copy to own, please purchase at sportsawardsonline.com.

REFUNDS
$15 is non-refundable once online learning links are sent to a student upon registration. Refunds will not be available after March 30, 2015.
