[EDITOR’S NOTE: The following is a Letter to the Editor, written by a Reader. It does not necessarily reflect the opinion of The B-Town Blog nor its staff:]

Dear Editor,

On March 26, Highline Schools Superintendent Enfield met with interested parents and community members at Mount Rainier High School.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Audio of the one-hour event is below:

A highlight for me was hearing the questions of community members from the Evergreen High School service area. A freshman student asked questions about why AVID is not continued at the high school level, when it was so helpful to her in middle school. A parent discussed how her son is doing well in advanced math and is ready to continue on an advanced math track, but she does not see the level of opportunities for pre-engineering classes that she thinks he needs for college readiness.

Dr. Enfield discussed some changes the district is making to add more advanced classes at all high schools. Other topics included student safety and suspension, testing, earthquake safety, teacher retention, overcrowding and math. Dr. Enfield definitely fulfilled her promise to discuss any and all topics.

Having students speak is a great idea. I hope more students will share at the next meetings. The next meeting dates are:

  • April 27, 6 – 7 p.m. in the Evergreen Campus library
  • May 21, 6 – 7 p.m. in the Tyee Educational Complex library
  • June 2, 6 – 7 p.m. in the Highline High School library

Also, there are two meeting with school board members scheduled as well:

  • Michael Spear is at the Pacific Middle School Library on March 31 at 6 p.m.
  • Bernie Dorsey is at the Chinook Middle School Library on April 21 at 6 p.m.
  • Finally, there will be some community budget meetings in early May. The current dates are May 7 and 13.

– Stuart Jenner
