The Mariners will also be honoring Seattle’s Negro League baseball team (the Steelheads) of 1946.

Edgar serves as Burien representative on the Watershed Resource Inventory Area Region 9 group (WRIA 9). This is an explanation of what WRIA 9 works on:bertthesalmon

“Chinook salmon, bull trout, and steelhead are listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. In this watershed, citizens, scientists, businesses, conservation groups, and governments are working together to respond to the decline of salmon and the lands and waters on which the fish depend. In 2005, the partners completed a science-based Salmon Habitat Plan. Carrying out the plan recommendations will protect and restore a healthy watershed ecosystem for both people and fish. Watershed salmon habitat recovery is part of the work of the Puget Sound Partnership. Funding for coordination of salmon habitat recovery is provided by 17 local governments in the watershed.”

Burien is a member city of WRIA 9, which recently helped secure funding for the Seahurst Park seawall removal and Seahurst beach redevelopment project.

Here’s more on Councilmember Edgar from a press release:

Bob Edgar has been a passionate, hands on, champion and involved citizen volunteer for the environment for many years. Aside from his regular job and working on the Council, he has donated his own time to several research projects over the years. Bob has worked with scientists and researchers on: the development of safer outdoor clothing for back packers and mountain climbers in the Northwest, Elephant research in Kenya, Polar Bear research in Hudson Bay, Migratory Songbird research in Jackson Hole, Gray Whale research on Vancouver Island and in Puget Sound and Migratory Sea Turtle recovery methods and research in the Caribbean. Additionally, he has worked on several environmental conservation projects in Burien. In 1988-89, Bob and several members of the Shorewood on the Sound Community Club worked to put the acquisition of the Salmon Creek Greenbelt/Green Space on the ballot making it the first ever green space acquired by King County. When Burien became a city in the 1990’s, King County handed over that green space to the new City of Burien.
